40 Million Slaves Worldwide

Slavery still exists today. In fact, there are over 40 million slaves in the world currently.

This comes from a report from the Walk Free Foundation, a non-governmental organization that is trying to end slavery, and the International Labor Organization (ILO), a United Nations agency that focuses on labor rights.

The report explains that people are captured and often forced into labor or marriage. About 25 million are working in factories, farms, and as sex industry workers. 15 million are in forced marriages. 25% of these slaves are children. The report stated that people often cannot leave because of violence, threats, and abuse of power.

This is happening in Africa, the Pacific, Europe and Asia. Andrew Forrest, chairman of the Walk Free Foundation said in a statement, “This speaks to the deep-seated discrimination and inequalities in our world today, coupled with a shocking tolerance of exploitation. This has to stop. We all have a role to play in changing this reality - business, government, civil society, every one of us.” What are your thoughts on this?
