Many people in El Salvador are heartbroken after Gustavito, a 15-year-old hippopotamus at the National Zoo, was beaten to death.
The Zoo’s director Vladan Henriquez says the hippo was covered with bruises and wounds after being attacked with what they believe are metal bars, knives and rocks.
The attack took place sometime on Tuesday, February 21st. However, for 2 days, zookeepers were not able to see the hippo’s injuries because he wouldn’t leave his pool. Unfortunately, on Sunday, February 26th, Gustavito died.
The zoo is temporarily closed until further notice. Many people are mourning on social media, and some are leaving flowers at the gate of the zoo.
Although there are cameras at the zoo, there were none overlooking the area where the attack took place. Police are investigating and questioning zoo workers to determine who committed this violent act.
