A top level prosecutor in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, Tara Lenich, was arrested this week and charged with illegal wiretapping. Lenich was the deputy chief of the Violent Criminals Enterprises Bureau, and the police say she had been forging a judge’s signature for a wiretap so that she could listen to conversations between a male police detective and a female coworker of hers over a love affair gone wrong.
Lenich had been renewing the wiretap every 30 days for a year without permission from a judge and had been telling other prosecutors in her office that she was working on an internal investigation and was the only one permitted to listen to the conversations.
A district attorney spokesperson said they have “ordered a comprehensive review of our protocols and procedures to make sure that this abuse of authority never happens again.”
To avoid a conflict of interest, officials have asked federal authorities in Brooklyn to prosecute Lenich.
