Private Chelsea Manning is a transgender soldier, known for being imprisoned after leaking about 750,000 classified military documents to WikiLeaks.
As of today, Manning is now a free woman and will be able to lead a life outside of jail. She was released early on Wednesday, May 17th. She was sentenced for 35 years, but only served 7.
This is because former President Barack Obama commuted her sentence before leaving office in January. President Donald Trump was upset about her release and called her an “ungrateful traitor.” As of now, the Army said that Chelsea will stay on active duty while her military court conviction is currently being appealed. She plans to challenge her conviction so she can keep her health benefits from the Army. If her appeal is rejected, she will be discharged from the Army without benefits.
