James Comey, the former FBI Director, was in charge of the investigation over Russia’s interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The investigation had already lead to National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn being fired for misleading the government over communication with Russia.
Recently, President Trump fired Comey for not properly handling the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server. After a meeting with Trump on February 14th, Comey documented that Trump asked him to close the investigation into Flynn’s actions.
The White House is denying that Trump tried to influence Comey during the investigation. A senior Republican congressman, Jason Chaffetz, has requested the FBI present all records of contact between Trump and Comey by May 24th.
If President Trump attempted to obstruct, influence, or impede any official proceedings, it could be grounds for impeachment.
