Did you ever think it would be possible to chew a piece of gum to find out if you have cancer? Well, Volatile Analysis, an organization in Alabama is doing just that.
According to Katherine Bazemore, the President and CEO of Volatile Analysis, our bodies produce chemicals called volatile organic compounds which can help indicate if an individual has cancer.
The volatile organic compounds are different for each type of cancer. When a patient chews the gum developed by Volatile Analysis, doctors can tell which type of cancer is present. Why did these doctors choose gum? Well, chewing gum stays in our mouths for an extended period of time, which makes it easier to test.
While the gum is still being tested, doctors and researchers are hoping that the gum will be available in 2018. What do you think about this method of testing?
