We may have some important information for dog owners who love to give bone treats. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently received reports that 90 dogs became sick from eating bone treats. In addition, 15 others have died.
Most dog owners know not to share a turkey or chicken bone. They can splinter and hurt your dogs. Bone treats are similar in this way except they are cooked, processed and packaged as dog treats. Preservatives, seasonings and/or smoked flavorings were added to the treats.
Those who became ill ate “Ham Bones, “Pork Femur Bones, “Rib Bones” and “Smokey Knuckle Bones”. The sick dogs showed symptoms such as blockages in the stomach, choking, cuts in the mouth and tonsils, vomiting, diarrhea and internal bleeding. The reports also included product problems like mold appearing on the bones.
The holidays are coming up. You may want to pay attention to foods on your table and to the trashcan full of leftover food. Your pup may want to snatch a bone! We recommend having a safe and healthy alternative ready for your dogs!
