A large ring of horsemeat dealers was uncovered by Spanish police. They arrested 65 people from around the world and charged them with being part of a criminal organization.
Europol, the European police agency said the ring was dealing in animals that had previously been labeled unsuitable for consumption because of their age and/or condition.
Those arrested have also been charged with animal abuse, document forgery, crimes against public health and money laundering.
Officials became aware of the ring during an earlier horsemeat scandal. In 2013, a significant number of meat labeled as ground beef contained large amounts of horsemeat.
