Ecuador Elects Paraplegic President

Following a competitive presidential race Ecuador has elected a new president. When he takes office in May, Lenin Moreno will be the only head of state who uses a wheelchair. Moreno is a paraplegic who served as vice president under the departing president Rafael Correa.

Both men are members of the leftist political party, “Citizens Revolution.” Moreno has been in the political spotlight for more than 10 years. At first he found it difficult to be taken seriously because of his disability. Although in the past Ecuador did not do well in taking care of its disabled population, Moreno has helped Ecuador make significant progress over the last decade.

Spending on initiatives for people with disabilities has gone up from under $1 million a year to $200 million a year. The country now promotes itself as an accessible tourist destination.
