Germany Allows Third Gender Option

Germany’s highest court ruled that government documents must include a third gender option. Currently only male and female options are provided.

A 28 year-old German citizen filed suit, saying German law needed to allow Germany’s birth registry to include a third option, either inter or diverse. The Court gave German legislators until the end of 2018 to decide how to implement the new rule and suggested the legislators either add a third gender or eliminate the category of gender.
