A cyber-attack is spreading around the world. According to Microsoft, the attack started in
Ukraine where hackers first targeted M.E.Doc, a tax-accounting software company.
It has since spread to 64 other countries including France, Russia, Spain and the United States. So far, there have been over 2,000 attacks, 60% of which are in Ukraine and 30% in Russia. The cyber attackers demand the victim pays a $300 payment, but even if the victim pays the ransom, the cyber criminals do not restore the victim’s computer network.
Investigators encourage people never to pay the ransom. Security researchers and law enforcement are still unsure who the hackers are, but they say this type of ransomware is more sophisticated than anything they have seen before.
