Hobby Lobby, an arts and crafts retailer, is facing trouble with the law. The US customs caught them smuggling thousands of packages that were falsely labeled as “ceramic tiles.” The packages actually contained ancient Iraqi religious artifacts from the Middle East.
It was found that the Christian owners of the retailer started collecting them in 2009, and bought more than 5,000 artifacts for $1.6 million in 2010. Hobby Lobby was sued by the Department of Justice and they settled in court. Hobby Lobby will pay a $3 million fine and will turn in the artifacts.
Hobby Lobby president, Steve Green, released a statement saying, “We should have exercised more oversight and carefully questioned how the acquisitions were handled.” The company is working with the government during the investigation to resolve this issue.
