Yesterday, during a private meeting in Congress, Marcy Kaptur, a Democratic House representative from Ohio, said that women in Congress who dress inappropriately may invite sexual harassment. Her reasoning for speaking out was because she saw a staff member with “cleavage so deep it was down to the floor…”
She thinks the Congress should have stricter dress codes for women just like other companies and the military. Men are required to wear a suit and tie, but the women have more flexibility in how they dress. Several Democratic representatives were shocked and not happy about her comments, saying it seems as though she is blaming victims of sexual harassment.
In an interview with the media, Kaptur clarified her comments saying that she only wants to improve the decorum and dress code. By improving the dress code, women could be more protected by people who want to exploit them. What do YOU think?
