On Friday, May 19th, Iran will host their presidential election. There are 5 candidates running this year, but only 2 are seen as contenders. Ebrahim Raisi, a hardline conservative, and current Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who is running for a second term. -
A major focus around this election is improving the economy and creating millions of jobs for Iranians.
But in Iran, the president is not the most powerful person in the country. That job is reserved for the Supreme Leader, 77-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Any new policies the president enacts must be approved by the Supreme Leader.
If one of the candidates doesn’t receive over 50% of the votes, a runoff election will take place on Friday, May 26th.
