On Tuesday, August 8th, two US defense officials said that an Iranian QOM-1 drone came within about 100 feet of a US Navy F/A-18 attempting to land on the USS Nimitz in the Persian Gulf.
Officials said that it was “the first time that an Iranian drone has interrupted a flight pattern.” The drone didn’t seem to be armed, but it caused the US aircraft to take “evasive action.”
Officials said that the drone confrontation was considered as unprofessional, dangerous, and unsafe. It prompted them to use an emergency radio to warn the drone operators to back away. It didn’t respond to any of the commands, and then eventually flew off.
