IRS Warns About Fake Charities
Favorite

The IRS is currently warning people about possible fake charity scams in connection to Hurricane Harvey.

Scammers can make claims that they work for a charitable company and try to collect information from you. This could lead to identity theft. But the IRS has ways for you to prevent this.

The IRS recommends that you donate to well known charities. They have a search feature you can use called “Exempt Organizations Select Check.” It provides a list of eligible charities you can donate to. Remember to never give out your Social Security number, credit card numbers or bank account numbers to people who claim they work for a charity.

If you need more information about donating money and how to avoid scammers, go to IRS’s disaster relief page on IRS.gov for more details.
