On Sunday, August 14th, 4 American swimmers say they were robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro. The 4 reported they were taking a taxi back to the Olympic Village from a party when they were pulled over by individuals pretending to be armed police officers. After security footage was released of the swimmers arriving back at the Olympic Village joking around like nothing happened, many began to question the story.
Following their testimony, a Brazilian judge issued a ‘search and seizure warrant’ for U.S. swimmers Ryan (lock-tee) Lochte and James (fay-gen) Feigen. At this point, Lochte had already left on a flight back to the US but Feigen is believed to still be in Brazil.
Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger were taken off a plane when they were preparing to return to the U.S.
A Brazilian Police has informed the Associated Press that Lochte did indeed fabricate the story about being robbed. His teammates confessed to the police after they were pulled from the plane. On the night of the alleged incident, there was surveillance video showing an American swimmer fighting with a gas station security guard. According to the security guard, the athletes got aggressive when he pointed a gun to prevent them from leaving the gas station after a bathroom door was damaged. There was a discussion and the athletes agreed to pay for the damage.
