On Sunday, October 29th, in wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, actor Anthony Rapp, known for CBS’ Star Trek: Discovery, went public that actor Kevin Spacey made a sexual advance towards Rapp in 1986. Both actors were on Broadway in two different shows in New York City. Rapp was only 14 years old at the time, and Spacey was 26. Rapp shared this story with The Advocate in 2001, but didn’t name Spacey.
Now, Rapp has told Buzzfeed News that Spacey made sexual advances towards him at a party and Spacey carried him to a bed and laid on top of him, and tried to seduce him. Celebrities and fans poured their hearts out in support of Rapp on social media.
Spacey says he doesn’t remember the encounter, but apologized to Rapp in a lengthy post on social media. In the end of the post, he came out as a gay man and said, “I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior.” The LGBTQ+ community was angered and disturbed by his post and believe what he did was inexcusable. They also said that homosexuality and pedophilia are not the same thing.
Fans of American Beauty, which Spacey won an Oscar for, said that they couldn’t look at the movie the same way, because his character was attracted to a 17-year-old girl. Now, they find the film more disturbing. Representatives for Spacey and Rapp have declined to add more comments.
