Yesterday, heart doctors collectively released and published new guidelines to more aggressively combat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. They did this by lowering the level of what is considered high blood pressure. The previous limit was at 140/90 and has been lowered to 130/80.
The change means the number of US adults afflicted would increase by at least 30 million compared to the previous guidelines. That means about 46% of adults in the US currently have high blood pressure. Those who were added to this category will be encouraged to change their diets, exercise more and make changes instead of relying on medication.
The heart doctors and experts come from organizations such as the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology and 9 other groups. Patients with high blood pressure, especially those over age 65, are urged to talk with their doctors about how aggressive they want their treatment to be.
