Oklahoma Abortion Bill Moves Forward

On February 14th, 2017, the House Public Health Committee Oklahoma passed House Bill 1441.

House Bill 1441, written by Republican state representative Justin Humphrey, requires women to get permission from the father of the fetus to get an abortion.

Humphrey explained his reasoning for this bill, saying that men should have say regarding child support from the start, that they should take more responsibility before birth, and that men should have a say in the decision because “women have a mistaken belief that their bodies are their own.” He also refers to women as a “host,” saying that their body is separate and they’re “inviting a body in.”

There are a few exceptions to HB 1441 including incidents when the pregnancy has been produced via rape or incest, when the mother’s life is in danger, and if the father is deceased.

HB 1441 passed by a 5-2 vote. It will now go to the House and if it passes there, it will then go to the Senate and then the governor.
