2016 will be remembered for many things. The recent presidential election, the 2016 Olympics, and also the rise in online harassment. Trolls across the globe made their presence known by attacking everyone and everything.
Celebrities, journalists, students, politicians, and more were subject to brutal harassment.
Offensive slurs, profanity, racist and derogatory comments and even death threats were used by users of the internet to hurt and offend others.
Some individuals who have been attacked by online users have had their personal information such as their addresses, phone numbers, and websites published publically and hacked. While there is the Violence Against Women Act, which was amended in 2006 to “prohibit online threats of death or serious injury” there has not been a lot of implementation of the act.
