A Kansas City, Kansas police officer Tuesday was shot and killed while pursuing suspects in a carjacking. Captain Robert Melton was a 17 year veteran of the department he was serving.
The shooting occurred shortly before 2 o’clock in the afternoon when Melton spotted the suspect vehicle and chased it for two miles. Four suspects bailed out of the vehicle they were in and began shooting at Melton. He was pronounced dead by doctors 30 minutes after he was taken to a nearby hospital.
One suspect has been arrested, two others detained and a fourth remains on the loose.
Melton’s family is asking for privacy as they grieve.
Mark Holland, the mayor of Kansas City, is asking people to not jump to conclusions about why the 46 year old officer was killed. Tensions around police shootings are running high across the country after two recent police ambushes left eight officers dead and several more injured.
Melton is the second Kansas City police officer to be killed in the line of recent duty. Detective Brad Lancaster was shot and killed May 9th, also by a carjacking suspect.
