Yesterday, Ed Murray resigned from his position as mayor of Seattle. He was the first openly gay mayor to be elected in the United States. Before being elected in 2014 he served 18 years as a state legislator. The reason for his resignation is due to child sex abuse allegations.
For the last 5 months, he has been pushed to resign after the first lawsuit was announced. He withdrew from the Seattle re-election in May, but would not resign as the current mayor.
Murray has so far denied the allegations, but is now resigning after a fifth person publicly accused him of child sex abuse. This time, it was his cousin. He apologizes for the “painful situation” that the people of the city and his staff are in. He says he is being attacked for his support of LGBT rights and awareness, among other reasons.
He will be temporarily replaced by Council President Bruce Harrell who will soon decide whether or not he will continue serving until the election on November 7th.
