Strawberries Rank #1 in Pesticide Use

How often do you wash your favorite fruit or vegetable before eating them?

An annual report by the Environmental Working Group found that nearly 34 types of grown produce were contaminated with pesticide residues.

This year, strawberries remained at the top of the list with the highest concentration of pesticides. Sweet corn and avocados were ranked as having the lowest concentration.

So, what are pesticides?

Pesticides are commonly used in fruits and vegetables to control pests such as: insects, rodents, bacteria, mold, and fungus. According to the World Health Organization, these chemicals are potentially toxic to humans.

In fact, the study found that the most contaminated sample of strawberries had 20 different pesticides.

To reduce your exposure to pesticides, the Environmental Working Group recommends buying organic produce whenever possible.

If you don't want to feed your family contaminated foods, the EWG Shopper's Guide helps you make wise choices, whether you're buying regular or organic produce.
