A federal judge granted a pregnant teenager the right to an abortion. The girl has been in a Texas jail since September when she was caught illegally crossing into the US from Mexico. She is now 15 weeks pregnant.
Texas state law required her to get permission for an abortion from her parents, which she did, but officials wouldn’t let her out of jail to get the procedure. Instead they sent her for anti-abortion counseling and an ultrasound.
Texas argued that because the girl was undocumented, she had limited constitutional rights, but on Wednesday, US District Judge Tanya Chutkin rejected Texas’s arguments, and ordered Texas officials not to prevent or interfere with the girl’s access to an abortion.
