The footballs that are used today in the NFL are different than they used to be. With the Super Bowl coming up, and the 2016-2017 football season coming to an end, we are going to talk about the history of the ball that put this game on the map.
Horween Leather Company, the official supplier of leather for NFL football’s, as well as NBA basketballs, have an interesting history. Located in Chicago, Illinois, Horween Leather Company was founded in 1905. The two Horween brothers became close with the owner of the Chicago Bears, George S. Halas. Halas approached the brothers about the balls that are used during Cardinal games, and eventually they decided they wanted to make the best type of ball possible.
While these discussions were taking place, a manufacturer that would later be known as Wilson Sporting Goods Co., a company many know today, began creating handmade footballs, and were also based in Chicago. Horween Leather Company and the now Wilson Sporting Goods Co., began working together.
Deals were signed to make Wilson the premier football supplier of the NFL, and Horween was made their top leather supplier. The two organizations continue to work together today, and will be supplying the 120 footballs used in the Super Bowl this weekend.
We hope everyone enjoys the Super Bowl this year! Which team do you think will win? The Patriots or the Falcons?
