Over the last five years there’s been an increase in military themed television shows. Not only that, there’s also been an increase in demand for authenticity in these programs.
This means that Hollywood is looking for veterans to help make the shows realistic. Some veterans serve as consultants, offering guidance on the use of weapons and military strategy. Other veterans have become writers, directors and actors. One new show, SEAL Team, has employed more than 100 veterans.
National Geographic’s new program, Long Road, tells the true story of an ambush that left eight soldiers dead. The program consulted with Gold Star families. Veterans’ involvement ensures that programs will not only be entertaining, but also will honestly portray military life and honor the work and sacrifice of veterans.
