Attention all cat and dog lovers...did you know that dogs are smarter than cats? A group of scientists and researchers say a recent study suggests just that. The study will be published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroanatomy. A group of researchers from six different colleges around the world studied a wide variety of animals. They found that dogs have over 500 million neurons in their cerebral cortex, while cats have about half of that. Us, humans, have about 100 billion neurons in our brains. Neurons process and transmit information into the brain, helping with thinking and planning. The cerebral cortex is a part of the brain and is divided in 4 parts which are called lobes. Suzana Herculano-Houzel, a professor at Vanderbilt University that led the study said, “The more units you find in the brain, the more cognitively capable the animal is.” Dog lovers have believed this for many years, stating why they help assist people with disabilities or they work with the police. What do you think? Do you agree that dogs are smarter than cats?
